Music Video Evaluation

Music video evaluation

The name of the song is radioactive by imagine dragons we chose this song firstly because our video is about a unstable friendship or made “radioactive” by current events another reason for choosing this song in particular was because both me and my partner are familiar with the lyrics and timings in the song itself and with the beat and timings of certain sounds in the song can be used to structure the video for example when the beat changes in the chorus there is a cut between the each of our lip syncing

In my research I analysed the videos for avicii-waiting for love, Alex Clare-too close and John Newman- each of which had different styles, avicii having purely narrative john Newman having performance and Alex Clare having a mixture of both. Doing this gave us a wide range of reference when making creative decisions on the music video and in too close the performance ties in with the narrative as in he is part of the narrative while performing and we decide to incorporate this into our video by cutting it up in terms of narrative and using the flow of the song to influence the staging of the video

In our music video there is quite a lot of chase scenes so in these we decided to experiment with different shot type but the majority of shots for these sequences is half body shots and close ups. In the video there is use of full body shots and first person shots. In terms of camera angles we decided for a more basic approach using only front back and side shots not from any angle but we did use a range of panning shots in order to give us “more” shot and cutting down on overall amount of takes to make the filming more efficient . The speed of editing was quite a bit slower as there were certain shots taken later than others due to time restraints and perhaps the hardest part of editing was one of two things syncing the music with the lip syncing or continuity. The continuity was probably due to incorrect staging of shots and the lip syncing can be fixed by extremely careful editing. In the video transitions are used to cut between the flashback and present day and to give a shot that would only cover half of what is needed it is used seamlessly to create the illusion of a wider shot. There are not many visual effects in the video apart of the flashback which has a darkened quality to it to show what it is and during the lip syncing out of the characters referred to as black and white or light and dark when dark lip sync’s the lighting is darken to connote his character’s evil personality

I believe that the target audience would be teens and above not because of any extreme violence but because the concept of the video and the idea presented in in, I don’t think that it would appeal to them but somehow being relatable because it highly likely that they have a broken friendship due to either one of their actions and may interest them also since it is a down to earth everyday music video that may help with the immersion into the narrative

I believe that the most successful element of the videos would be timing certain shots with the music so the music and beat matches the shot which is being shown and gives fluidity to the video which is quite hard to find in music videos nowadays.

The least successful elements of the video I believe was the running sequences because the lack of continuity in them can ruin the flow the idea itself using first person shots to give a new view to the action during the running sequence and I personally believe that coming back to it later in the video makes the watcher think more than they need to about the narrative and connotations of such.
